What is Citizen Service for Obama?
The mission of this site, Citizen Service for Obama, is to provide information and generate excitement for supporters to participate in volunteer opportunities across the country. By showing our support for service by actually participating we will demonstrate to others that Obama inspires the best to come out in all of us. When Obama volunteers are helping seniors, cleaning up a park, joining a pre-school reading program, or sending packages to our troops in Iraq wearing Obama gear and participating as a recognized Obama group, the effort will speak louder than any advertisement for the candidate.
What kinds of citizen service opportunities are there? How can I get involved?
The sky is the limit. With the energy that is being generated for the candidacy of Barack Obama, all we need to do is head it in the right direction. The internet is a great place to start. You will find many volunteering opportunities listed on the site. Check out the SERVICE CATEGORIES at the right for more information.
Why is service important?
"Your own story and the American story are not separate - they are shared. And they will both be enriched if we stand up together, and answer a new call to service to meet the challenges of our new century". These are the words of Barack Obama. It is this shared vision of the type of country in which we want to live that is the basis for our efforts to generate a higher level of citizen service by Obama supporters.
Why is Senator Obama a better candidate than Senator McCain for citizen service?
Here is what the Politico says:
"John McCain, who's predicated his presidential run in no small part on his distinguished military record, frequently exhorts Americans - and especially young Americans - to serve their country. Despite that appeal, he has yet to offer any proposals to expand or transform national service outside of the military.
Barack Obama, by contrast, has proposed dramatically expanding Americorps and the Peace Corps, adding 65,000 members to the military and creating an annual $4,000 tax credit for post-secondary education in exchange for 100 hours of community service."
What does Senator Obama have to say about service?
Barack Obama has an entire section on his web site at www.barackobama.com that talks about his plan for service. Check it out for the details.
While John McCain has detailed descriptions on his web site at www.johnmccain.com on why to overturn Roe v. Wade and the 2nd Amendment, he doesn't have anything about calling on Americans to serve their country other than through the military.
